Vaping products are for adults 19 and over who already use nicotine. If you don't use nicotine, don't start. If you do, this guide covers the four kinds of device we carry and the words you'll see on the shelf, so you can walk in (or order online) knowing what to ask for.
The four kinds of device
Every vape is a battery that heats e-liquid in a coil. What changes is how much you look after it yourself.
- Disposables: prefilled and ready to use. Most recharge by USB-C; when the e-liquid runs out, the whole device is done. Puff counts on the box are the manufacturer's rating, and real numbers depend on how long and how often you draw.
- Closed pod systems: a reusable battery with prefilled pods that click on (STLTH Loop, Level X, OXBAR MagLink and Ripper X are examples). You replace the pod, not the device. Pods generally only fit batteries from the same system.
- Refillable pod kits: small devices you fill with your own e-liquid, such as the Uwell Caliburn and Vaporesso XROS ranges. You replace the pod or coil every week or two, and you choose any e-liquid you like.
- Mods and tanks: larger batteries with adjustable power and separate tanks. They make the most vapour and need the most know-how, so they suit experienced users.
Nicotine: salts and freebase
Nicotine strength is shown in milligrams per millilitre (mg/mL). Federal law caps it at 20 mg/mL, so nothing sold in Canada goes higher.
Nicotine salt ("nic salt") is made to feel smoother at higher strengths and suits low-power pod devices. Disposables and prefilled pods use it too. Freebase nicotine is the traditional form; it comes in lower strengths (such as 3 or 6 mg/mL) and is made for higher-power devices that produce more vapour.
Two ways to draw
- Mouth-to-lung (MTL): you draw into your mouth first, then inhale. It's a tighter, quieter draw that most pod devices and disposables are built for.
- Direct-to-lung (DTL): you inhale straight into your lungs in one breath. It needs a looser airflow, lower-resistance coils and lower-strength freebase e-liquid.
Picking your first device
If you want something with no setup, a disposable or a closed pod system is the simplest. If you'd rather choose your own e-liquid and spend less over time, a refillable pod kit is the usual next step.
